This is an MA Public History dissertation project with two parts.
Firstly, to discuss and discover the history of Somerville College, Oxford through oral history interviews. It aims to contribute a little to the record of history, both of Somerville itiself, and of women in Oxford and higher education more generally.
Secondly, it aims to promote and consider the importance of oral histories in a higher education setting. As an history student myself, I have found the process of interviewing to be incredibly illuminating about the practice of history – and I hope to share this with other students. The use and reuse of these histories is also incredibly revealing, and can (and should) be a tool used further in the study of history.
